True Blood and Entrepreneurial Vampires

I admit it…

…I recently got hooked on True Blood.

I have watched the first season, and it is fantastic!

Between the darkness, the characters, the blood and the fantastic story lines they use… I am a fan.

Much like Sons of Anarchy that I wrote about before.

For far too many years, the shows that were playing on late-night television were awful. No creativity. Copy-and-paste plot lines. Crap characters.

Every once in a while one would pop up that was ok… but most stunk up the bloody screen.

Something shifted and the writers and creatives are cranking out some genuinely good shows.

Considering I am not much of a tv guy, it pains me to admit I am taken in by some of these new series.

Like True Blood.

The story of Vampires and Humans co-existing on earth.

The story of how the vampires feed, and convert humans to vampires.

The stories of some very unusual personal powers that some of the humans have… bordering on as scary of a power as fangs are.

And Anna Paquin is just hot in this show!  

She makes True Blood shine.

I also LOVE the names they have created for the show. “Fangbangers” is one I love!  This is the name of the humans who love to get bit and banged by the vampires.  It’s a whole subculture of humans that take great pleasure in this.

Creating unique names like this is a skill and art in itself.

One you should be practicing!

It makes book titles more interesting.

Subject lines.

Headlines.

Product names.

Even dog names.  My daughters and I have a game we play at the dog park.  We go around and create new names for each dog we see, based on how they look and their personality.

We have a blast doing this… and it is teaching my girls how fun it can be to create names like this and to use their creativity in all kinds of innovative ways.

Try it.

True Blood also makes me think of a few other things that relate to you and I.

…and our ability to shine in our own businesses.

The first thing us humans need to be weary of… Time Vampires.  They are everywhere!  Those innocent looking phone calls or emails that drain you of a precious hour out of your day.  It may not seem like much to the person calling, but each hour sitting on the phone is a significant chunk of real, money-making, work not getting done.

Be very, very careful of the time vampires.

Avoid them like the plague if possible, and cut off their blood supply (your time) at the pass.  “I have another call in 10 minutes” usually repels them like garlic.

Also be very careful of the entrepreneurial spirit vampires.

They are the ones who try and suck the passion out of your entrepreneurial drive.

They try and make you believe that going back to a job is the most honorable thing a mere mortal can do.

They do everything in their evil power to suck you dry and make you feel completely drained…

…energy-less and ready to sink deep into the deep dark hallows of depression.

Been there, done that… got the bumper sticker.

Avoid it.

Do whatever it takes.

My mission this year is change.

BIG CHANGE.

Positive change.

Forward change.

…And I have made many changes already.

But they weren’t easy to do.

Nor will they ever be.

BIG CHANGE takes guts.  It takes ‘testicular fortitude’ as one friend says.

Few can do well on change…

…but the new era of entrepreneurs THRIVE on change.

What is important to note here:

* They are investing their time and money into their marketing. Marketing IS sales when you do it right. The more you market yourself the more you sell. Period.

Near where I live there is a little strip mall with a little bay at the end for different foods.  Business owners come and go from this spot every 6 months or so.  Always a new owner, a new name, a new type of food.  The funny thing?  Not once – EVER – have they sent out fliers to the neighbours announcing their grand opening, their take out or delivery options, even a damn menu!

They just EXPECT people to look for them, and buy from them.

I repeat, it is YOUR responsibility to get the word out that you exist and that you are different!

It is NOT your potential buyers responsibility to seek you out.

That’s your job.

* They tied themselves to a good cause.  go to the site and watch the video.  This is a very good cause here.  Then think about who you are helping when you invest in the canvas!

Hint hint: Valentines day is right around the corner – may be a good gift idea for a loved one.

The key is – invest in your marketing education – and then take MASSIVE action getting your newfound knowledge applied to your business and in front of those who are buyers.

Crack your back all the way to the email marketing bank

I have a buddy, who I’ve known for 40 of my 43 years on earth.  We grew up together, obviously, and have remained very good friends all this time.

He is a home renovator and general contractor.

I am a weird writer-type.

VERY different ways of making a livelihood.

He is always on his feet.

I am always sitting at a desk with keyboard or pen in my hands.

…hence the problem.

Sitting at a desk is a very bad thing for your health.

It causes excess weight to be put on.

And it can KILL your back.

For many, many years I have had a bad back.

Only made worse by the computer.

I do my Tae Kwon Do 4 days a week for cardio, and I walk my dog and marketing assistant, Casino, 7 days a week.

It helps.

But one of the best things I ever did was get an exercise ball to use as a chair.

Awesome!

Do it.

My back feels 100 times better.  It seems to definitely help strengthen the core muscles in the body and tighten up that softening middle which was partially created by sitting for so long.

The best part of the exercise ball?

I can sit down at the computer, crank out copy all day long, and get mini-workouts throughout the day.  I move it side to side, back and forth, and bounce a little up and down when needing to get the juices flowing.

Getting exercise while making money is a wonderful thing.

10 years (in March) I have been working on my craft… and it is the most enjoyable thing I have ever done.

It’s like therapy… but without the psychiatrist.

I highly recommend you get yourself a really good chair… the large exercise balls work great (except they can roll away on you when you get up… which is a minor, minor problem to have while living a life you love).

And I recommend you get REAL GOOD at writing emails.

And articles.

And sales copy.

You master those skills and you will never again wonder what you need to do to make more moola, nor will you ever be at a lack for marketing ideas.

Don’t be shy… everyone does it

 

The truth is…

Some people hide it.

Others flaunt it.

But the fact is, everyone I have always met in life wants better for themselves.

You may love the life you live right now.

…your health
…your relationships
…your spiritual beliefs
…and your present wealth

But there is something I would bet you have always wanted.

Something you have kept secret.

Maybe you have shared it with your friends, family or lovers.

The fact is…

…there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting more abundance in your life!

Despite all the negative nonsense in the media about wealth… or the occupiers wanting to rid the world of evil people who are successful… or the poor who want to steal from the rich…

…desiring wealth is a VERY good thing.

If it wasn’t for entrepreneurs who go after their dreams and do everything in their power to create wealth and abundance (through products that please people and a company that supports people and their families)…

…the world would be a very dismal place.

Entrepreneurs are the unsung heroes of the economy.

People like you and I that drag economies back from the brink.

And people like you and I (and John, who I want you to see in this video) that create breakthroughs others can aspire to.

FIRST: you should want to do good things with your wealth once you get it.  Help the underprivileged (on your own terms – no one else’s).  Support charities.  Whatever your do-good dream is… you should want it.

…the key – want it.

The one thing you need to do first before helping others with your new found wealth?

Help yourself.

This is the BIG second more of us need to understand.

Your daily success ritual

Every successful person has one.

Every great athlete swears by one.

…but peek inside the average day of those who struggle with success, money or confidence, and this almost always missing.

I’m talking about a daily ritual.

You need one or more of them.

One of the best ones you should develop is your morning ritual.

How you kick your day off right.

…it determines how the rest of your day goes.

And it sets you up for success in whatever you want.

When you roll out of bed in the morning, the first thing you determines how the rest of your day may go.

Do you check email? It means email is your main priority for the day, and you are setting yourself up to be a slave to the inbox.

Do you watch the local news? It means you are letting newscasters set your mood for the day (and it usually will be a negative mood, rarely are there good things discussed on the news).

But…

If you start your day out with a success ritual… amazing things can and will happen.

You have to try different ones to see which ritual gets you best results…. and you have to give each new test an honest chance before trying something new.

Here is my morning ritual, that I stick to religiously.

1) Wake (I am a night owl so I wake later ~7 am)
2) 30 minute brisk walk with my dog (fast walk that breaks a sweat)
3) While walking, listening to training audios on one area of interest.
4) Return home, walk my daughters to school.
5) Back home, I have a cup of coffee and make my daily smoothy (Mucuna puriens, Maca, protein, coconut oil, himalayan salt, astralagus, reishi powder, incan berry, banana or apple, and some type of liquid like milk, apple juice, etc)
6) Shower
7) Office

This sets me up for the right kind of day.

I feel great, I am alert and raring to go, and I get started with my writing (tracking in 15 minute increments how much focused writing I am doing that day.

A big thing for me is focused writing time so I am constantly looking for ways to eliminate meetings, phone calls, surfing and wasting time on social media sites – writing is my business so I need to do as much of it as possible).

Your ritual may be different, or you may need to start working on one.

There is no better time than right now to get this started.

One other ritual I highly recommend you develop is a marketing ritual.

…what are you doing each and every day to market yourself?

Set a schedule in advance.

Stick to it.

Weekly themes.

Monthly marketing themes.

Content development every day.
