Crack your back all the way to the email marketing bank

I have a buddy, who I’ve known for 40 of my 43 years on earth.  We grew up together, obviously, and have remained very good friends all this time.

He is a home renovator and general contractor.

I am a weird writer-type.

VERY different ways of making a livelihood.

He is always on his feet.

I am always sitting at a desk with keyboard or pen in my hands.

…hence the problem.

Sitting at a desk is a very bad thing for your health.

It causes excess weight to be put on.

And it can KILL your back.

For many, many years I have had a bad back.

Only made worse by the computer.

I do my Tae Kwon Do 4 days a week for cardio, and I walk my dog and marketing assistant, Casino, 7 days a week.

It helps.

But one of the best things I ever did was get an exercise ball to use as a chair.

Awesome!

Do it.

My back feels 100 times better.  It seems to definitely help strengthen the core muscles in the body and tighten up that softening middle which was partially created by sitting for so long.

The best part of the exercise ball?

I can sit down at the computer, crank out copy all day long, and get mini-workouts throughout the day.  I move it side to side, back and forth, and bounce a little up and down when needing to get the juices flowing.

Getting exercise while making money is a wonderful thing.

10 years (in March) I have been working on my craft… and it is the most enjoyable thing I have ever done.

It’s like therapy… but without the psychiatrist.

I highly recommend you get yourself a really good chair… the large exercise balls work great (except they can roll away on you when you get up… which is a minor, minor problem to have while living a life you love).

And I recommend you get REAL GOOD at writing emails.

And articles.

And sales copy.

You master those skills and you will never again wonder what you need to do to make more moola, nor will you ever be at a lack for marketing ideas.

The Story Selling Home Study Coaching program http://www.storysellingtips.com should be ready by Friday and is an incredible way to introduce your clients and prospects to your backstories… where your real money will be made.

Your back and your bank account will thank you.

Turning Stories into Wealth

Don’t be shy… everyone does it

The truth is…

Some people hide it.

Others flaunt it.

But the fact is, everyone I have always met in life wants better for themselves.

You may love the life you live right now.

…your health
…your relationships
…your spiritual beliefs
…and your present wealth

But there is something I would bet you have always wanted.

Something you have kept secret.

Maybe you have shared it with your friends, family or lovers.

The fact is…

…there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting more abundance in your life!

Despite all the negative nonsense in the media about wealth… or the occupiers wanting to rid the world of evil people who are successful… or the poor who want to steal from the rich…

…desiring wealth is a VERY good thing.

If it wasn’t for entrepreneurs who go after their dreams and do everything in their power to create wealth and abundance (through products that please people and a company that supports people and their families)…

…the world would be a very dismal place.

Entrepreneurs are the unsung heroes of the economy.

People like you and I that drag economies back from the brink.

And people like you and I (and John, who I want you to see in this video) that create breakthroughs others can aspire to.

FIRST: you should want to do good things with your wealth once you get it.  Help the underprivileged (on your own terms – no one else’s).  Support charities.  Whatever your do-good dream is… you should want it.

…the key – want it.

The one thing you need to do first before helping others with your new found wealth?

Help yourself.

This is the BIG second more of us need to understand.

John Paul Dejoria is one of the co-founders of the Paul Mitchell hair care products empire.

…a VERY WEALTHY MAN.

In this video (a must watch) – he reveals his strategies for wealth creation and distribution to those in need.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZUxodNRjQU

He shares a number of lessons in this interview with Barbara Walters.

But he never once apologies for being a billionaire.

He is proud of what he has built.

As a teen, he is fortunate to even make it out alive.

But he did and he went big.

WATCH THIS – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZUxodNRjQU

With the media and governments telling many of us how evil we are for desiring wealth, messages like this are a MUST for entrepreneurs who want to go big.

If a guy who lived in his car with his son can go on to become a billionaire…

…anyone can.

You may not want billions… but millions sure would change things wouldn’t it?

Watch that video and let me know your thoughts.

Troy

PS: It’s an 8 minute video – watch it.  He turned $700 into a mega-empire.  You can too. Keep your head high and be proud of your desire to do and be more in this world.

PPS: At 5:55 through the end there are some very powerful insights you need to hear.  Listen as his wife explains what the worst part of being a billionaire is.  Funny.

And the last 30 seconds of the video reaffirms my beliefs on the stupidity behind the “Tax the rich higher nonsense out there”.

…as well as his fantastic initiatives to educate those who want more in life…vs giving them handouts that will soon be pissed away.

Harsh, but true.

Your daily success ritual

Every successful person has one.

Every great athlete swears by one.

…but peek inside the average day of those who struggle with success, money or confidence, and this almost always missing.

I’m talking about a daily ritual.

You need one or more of them.

One of the best ones you should develop is your morning ritual.

How you kick your day off right.

…it determines how the rest of your day goes.

And it sets you up for success in whatever you want.

When you roll out of bed in the morning, the first thing you determines how the rest of your day may go.

Do you check email? It means email is your main priority for the day, and you are setting yourself up to be a slave to the inbox.

Do you watch the local news? It means you are letting newscasters set your mood for the day (and it usually will be a negative mood, rarely are there good things discussed on the news).

But…

If you start your day out with a success ritual… amazing things can and will happen.

You have to try different ones to see which ritual gets you best results…. and you have to give each new test an honest chance before trying something new.

Here is my morning ritual, that I stick to religiously.

1) Wake (I am a night owl so I wake later ~7 am)
2) 30 minute brisk walk with my dog (fast walk that breaks a sweat)
3) While walking, listening to training audios on one area of interest.
4) Return home, walk my daughters to school.
5) Back home, I have a cup of coffee and make my daily smoothy (Mucuna puriens, Maca, protein, coconut oil, himalayan salt, astralagus, reishi powder, incan berry, banana or apple, and some type of liquid like milk, apple juice, etc)
6) Shower
7) Office

This sets me up for the right kind of day.

I feel great, I am alert and raring to go, and I get started with my writing (tracking in 15 minute increments how much focused writing I am doing that day.

A big thing for me is focused writing time so I am constantly looking for ways to eliminate meetings, phone calls, surfing and wasting time on social media sites – writing is my business so I need to do as much of it as possible).

Your ritual may be different, or you may need to start working on one.

There is no better time than right now to get this started.

One other ritual I highly recommend you develop is a marketing ritual.

…what are you doing each and every day to market yourself?

Set a schedule in advance.

Stick to it.

Weekly themes.

Monthly marketing themes.

Content development every day.

The Cash Flow Calendar http://www.cashflowcalendars.com helps you get a regular marketing system in place and will consistently grow your business month after month.

Set up your success ritual today, and stick to it for a month before trying a new one (if you honestly feel the one you set up didn’t make a difference in your life and business).

I would love to hear what your ritual is… please share it below in the comments.

To a great year ahead!

The real reason that Apple is taking over the world

We all lost a great visionary and leader yesterday, Mr Steve Jobs. He lost his battle with Cancer, but he has won the minds, the devotion, and the wallets of millions of people around the world.

I too recently converted my main system to an iMac, after being a devoted and hardcore iPhone, iPad, and iPod user.

I get it.

I have used their personal One-to-One service… it ROCKS.

I have called their support line… never seen or experienced anything as proficient and friendly as that.

I am a fan.

And I love watching all the non-fans bashing Apple every chance they get.

Jealousy shines through.

Apple is on a roll and there is no chance I see of it slowing down.

Even this week’s iPhone announcement.

EVERYONE thought an iPhone 5 was coming… me too.

So everyone cried the blues when it was JUST a 4S out.

Why?

So what?

Its faster…better graphics…better camera…beter o/s…better speech recognition…and Siri.

My iPhone 3G has had a smashed screen since the summer, and I will be buying my new phone on Friday.

It is a great phone… who cares if the actual case isn’t different – that’s what the iPhone 5 was all about…right?

There are so many lesson in watching Apple grow and market themselves. Many of the Apple Success Secrets, I posted in this article.

But here are some other thoughts I posted on my examiner.com blog…

Not only do they have some of the slickest products in the marketplace today, Apple has by far the best customer care.

Take the new iPhone 4S, or the iPad 2, or the wonderfully elegant and powerful iMac 27″ system. Each and every one of them is well-designed, beautifully manufactured, with a solid and robust system for installing and upgrading apps.

Have a problem with one or more of them? Visit your local Apple store and get an immediate appointment with one of their technicians or one-to-one trainers. It is seamless and they know what they are doing…problems solved in no time.

If you are stuck at home or at the office…pick up the phone and call Apple Care. Within 5-10 minutes you are not only looked after, you have your answer, you have a friendly person to talk to, and they have updated their files so you never again have to explain who you are or what your history is with Apple.

Last, they are a MASTER at launching (and not telling in advance) new products. They have built such a devoted client base that grows by the minute, and eagerly awaits the next opportunity to pull out that credit card and charge up another $500 or $1,000.

Look at the latest iPhone 5 launch. Even up until the minute they announced the new product, no one really had a clue what they were launching. Apple woulddn’t tell… maybe some false rumours spread around to stir up the pot a bit…. but no real hard data showing exactly what was about to be released. Apple fans were foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the newest and greatest launch… and they weren’t disappointed.

Dare I say, unless the big computer companies of the world get it together, Apple will soon be converting ever one of them over to their world. Unless HP gets its act together and brings out something new and innovative. Unless Microsoft starts making their operating system easier to use, upgrade, and keep secure. Unless RIM pulls one out of the hat and delivers a wickedly innovative new Blackberry. Unless someone, anyone, steps up and shows that they are just as innovative as Apple is being…

…Apple will rule the computer world and the pc/android crowd will be crying in their parent’s basement.

Someone, anyone, please give Apple a run for their money here and show some form of initiative and creativity!

If you don’t…you will disappear.

Lady Gaga strikes again

Lady Gaga strikes againGREAT article in the Ny Times online about Lady Gaga’s newest notch on her success belt (it must be getting pretty full of notches by now!)

I have written about Lady Gaga before – you can read that article here

I never would have thought I would be such an advocate of someone like her…but you really have to give credit where credit is due. She is a FANTASTIC marketing machine.

Some of the most prominent lessons I shared in the Lady Gaga post before.

But some things in this interview in the NY times were especially important:

“We wanted to approach this like we were opening a blockbuster film,” said Steve Berman, vice chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M. “It became: ‘We’ll put a flag in that date well in advance. We won’t move. And what we’ll do for the next six months is pour gas on that fire every day, really branding the date.’ ”

Like any good movie campaign the selling of “Born This Way” began nearly a year in advance and continued as a well-timed drumbeat of promotional appearances, retail tie-ins and media deals that rose to a climax as the release date approached.

That means the promotion for “Born This Way” is far from over. “This is where the work begins,” he said. (her new album album Born This Way has sold more than 1m copies during its first week of release in the US)

That is an amazing insight on marketing campaigns and new product launches.

They take work – LOTS of it.

You don’t accomplish what she has in the ’4 hour workweek’.

She probably works 20 hours a DAY.

Some will be quick to shout out - but her last tour lost a FORTUNE (insert whining noise here). Yes it did. But it wasn’t because she isn’t selling tons of albums and winning even more awards. The reason she lost money (she freely admits it) is she wasn’t watching the bottom line. She wanted the most incredible customer experience possible (concert goers and music buyers). She wasn’t watching what that costs.

Most entrepreneurial run companies could never afford to do something like that.

But you can still (so can I – working on it) ramp up your efforts for a WOW experience.

She has a ton of great lessons for successful promotions here – are you willing to put in the effort?

How can YOU “approach this like we were opening a blockbuster film”?

It is not easy to do – it takes a lot of work, time, and elbow grease.

Some will step up and do it.

Others will complain how ‘hard’ it is.

…or how it doesn’t ‘apply to my business or industry’.

A few though will just get out there and DO IT.

Hopefully that’s you.

Earn Your Entrepreneurial Black Belt

An admission: I love getting my butt kicked. troy white tae kwon do

Since I was a teen, I have been active in one form of martial arts or another.

Starting off with Tae Kwon Do, moving to Karate, then to Kickboxing and Muay Thai, finally ending up back in Tae Kwon Do… where I still train regularly. (First Dan Black Belt).

The sweat and rush from a great workout is highly addictive, and, for me, broken bones and injuries are all part of the game.

All said and done; probably 5 or 6 broken bones in my feet or hands, numerous tears and sprains, one black eye for my wedding day (not by my, now, wife), and many a sore nose.

The other day someone asked me why I still do this, as I hobbled around on a gimped ankle.

To me, the whole experience is one I thrive on.

As much I thrive on growing my business, and helping my clients grow theirs.

There are a lot of similarities between getting beaten up in business and getting beaten up in class.

Earning your black belt is much like finally achieving that big goal or dream in your business as well.

Some of the similarities:

1) We ALL start out as white belts. No matter how cocky you are going into it, very quickly you learn how little you know and how much more you need to learn.

Usually it is some black belt (marketer) that takes you down and leaves you sitting in a pool of blood. Even if you get lucky here and there and whip out a great promotion (much like kicking the butt in class of someone who is senior in levels to you), the next time around you quickly learn a one-hit-wonder doesn’t last long.

There is always someone better, more determined, willing to put up with more pain, and is willing to work a hell of a lot harder than you are.

2) Drop kicked… or dropped out? After many years in martial arts, I have seen a huge percentage of drop outs. No different than in business.

Not everyone can handle getting knocked down and humiliated in front of everyone.

Some of us thrive on it, knowing that the better we get, the more likely it will be that we are the ones kicking butt sooner than later. Others will move from school to school, each time they get knocked down, they blame it on someone else, or something else other than themselves.

The ONLY way to succeed in business and in the ring is to get used to getting knocked down… and to thrive on knowing that each time you got knocked down, you just learned one thing that didn’t work for you.

Let the next battle begin!

3) Those who do get up and keep going, showing up regularly to learn and practice, are the ones you see getting better and better at their craft, ultimately become a master and a black belt.

Those who get cocky and think they know it all, end up getting their ass handed to them on a platter, and slink away never to return (silently mumbling behind their back on how shady the school or lessons are, how poorly run things are, how slow the learning curriculum is, etc)

As you well know, it takes a very unique (and rare) individual to keep taking a whooping, just to get up again and “SIR, yes sir… may I have another?”

4) You have to learn how to spar with the big boys. All the class training in the world is great, but it is useless if you never step into the ring to test your skills.

Much like the seminar and information junkies in the business world, there are martial arts students who do all the classes but shy quickly away from actually testing their skills in the real world (sparring in class or in tournaments).

Book and theoretical knowledge is good, but nothing compares to getting a bloody nose because you dropped your guard down at the
wrong time.

You can own the biggest library in the world on your craft, but if you have never once actually applied the golden advice in the books, you are no further ahead than someone just getting started.

5) Respect your teachers. Grand Master Yu runs the school I now attend. He’s a hard ass. He is intimidating (despite him being half a foot shorter than me, his presence is enough to scare the bejesus out of most students… me included).

He was brought up studying Tae Kwon Do in Korea and has brought many of their hard core tactics to Canada.

He was one of the judges for Tae Kwon do in the Beijing Olympics.

He is on the World Tae Kwon Do committee as one of their most senior advisors.

His walls are adorned and filled from floor to ceiling with medals, awards, accreditations, accolades and articles.

Despite all of this, there is the odd person who thinks they are king you-know-what and challenge him in one way or another. The
challenge doesn’t last long, and the challenger quickly is tossed from the school permanently.

If you don’t respect those who went before you, you will NEVER succeed.

6) Respect yourself. There is this girl in the class who is always apologizing for things. She makes a wrong move and apologizes. She kicks wrong, she apologizes. It is annoying… and it is definitely costing her in her training. She doesn’t think high enough of herself to think she deserves a higher belt.

If she keeps at it, she will never rise through the ranks. No different in business. You MUST learn to give yourself some credit for the good things you do… and learn from the bad (rather than berating yourself for a mistake).

In writing sales copy, you will never succeed if you don’t show your readers that you respect yourself, that you respect your products, and that you honestly feel you are the king (or queen) of the castle. If you constantly apologize and beat yourself down, they will buy form someone else who DOES

7) Don’t be afraid of pointing out inconsistencies or to ask questions when you are unclear on how a certain skill works on the street. I was in kickboxing and Muay Thai for 5 years and absolutely loved it.

By far the best workout I have ever had and the best shape I was ever in. It was a martial art that always fares well in real life self defence. Tae Kwon Do is easier on my body (now that I am over 40, the idea of sparring with 19 yr olds with huge egos and quick healing abilities just doesn’t do it for me anymore!).

But Tae Kwon Do lacks some of the street smart fighting skills that would be needed if you were ever in a real life and death situation.

So I am constantly asking my trainers (my masters) if we can work on more boxing, and if they can show me how certain skills would be used in an actual street situation.

And they do their best to help.

Sometimes they realize the skill just taught applies in the ring for competition, but is useless in the street… but at least I know. I also quite enjoy having another black belt in my class who trained in more hard core martial arts, like I did.

Him and I get in there sometimes and bash each other around much harder than usual. It is good to keep ourselves in shape, and to
show each other where our weaknesses are starting to show through (thanks to that getting old problem).

Much like all the information out there on the internet, this blog included. You must ask and find ways to make the skills being taught work for you, in real life, in your own business.

8) Expect to feel pain. In a dream world, we start up a business, have the perfect product, a hungry market, and make millions in our first year. But we all know that is rarely the case. It takes a lot of bloody noses, sore muscles, endless workouts and practice… even then we still have to work just as hard (even harder) to reach our first big dream.

We have to be willing to take our lumps, get up and do it all over again.

Whining about sore muscles won’t get you anywhere… running laps to work through the pain will though.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that much of the content in this post is fairly basic. I know that… and I share that… because many people are so stuck on learning the advanced techniques first, they forget that advanced techniques DON’T work the way they should UNTIL you know the basics.

All the advanced SEO techniques are useless for putting money in your pocket if you have no clue you are supposed to collect a lead or convert a lead into a buyer.

Despite this fact, some of the more unscrupulous marketers will pitch you their magic pill with little regard to if you know the basics or not… they just don’t care. Give them your money and they are happy. Complain about the fact that the course you bought is too advanced and isn’t working properly for you… and they will be happy to blame you, call you names and publicly humiliate you.

Imagine if someone walked into Grand Master Yu’s school and told him they wanted to “buy” a black belt from him. After he was done laughing, he’d kick them out. He would first try and get them to understand that they need to understand the basics first… but most people with the attitude that they can “buy” success will never get it and would keep moving until they DO find a school that will sell them a black belt (they are out there… always good for a laugh when they tell you it’s possible to get a black belt in a year).
Troy White Tae Kwon Do Black Belt
I have been training with Grand Master Yu for almost 5 years now, and have my First Dan Black Belt. Second Dan Black Belt is next… and it takes 2 years for Second Dan, then 3 more years for Third Dan, 4 for Fourth, etc.

When you consider that Grand Master Yu has his 9th Dan Black Belt, you can appreciate how long he has been hard at training (do the math – it is 45 years(!) to get to 9th.

I don’t feel like I am owed any levels of Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do… I know that I have to EARN IT.

More people need to get that.

I would love to hear your ideas.

Thanks again.

To your success,

Troy White
