Jon Taffer’s Butt Funnel

Buddhist…or Badass?

SUCH a great quote from the awesome movie Savages.

2 guys run a highly profitable business.

One has a buddhist attitude…the other fixes all the messes
the calm, peaceful way creates.

Fabulous movie, in my opinion.

What it made me think of though is how different people
run different types of marketing campaigns.

Some are subtle…some are outrageous.

Both CAN win…but the ones that USUALLY win are the
wild and wacky ones!

What is one of the most creative industries
for fun (and profitable) promotions?

The sports industry.

And YES, it does apply to you.

No matter what field we are talking about (pun intended), the
ideas behind these promotions could easily be changed to fit your
own.

The sports marketing industry is very creative and they have to
draw a lot of people out to their games… so their marketing had
better be good!

Imagine if you had to get 10,000 people to pay you money every
single week or month… what would you do?

Many with the marketing mindset aim for product launches and
successful campaigns for single products.  But what would you do
if you had a weekly event to sell out that delivered pretty well
the same experience?

Here are some great ideas that sports teams have used to get
people through the gates, money in hand.

As you go through these, PLEASE start thinking about how you
could make one or more of them work in your business.

I guarantee they could… if you try.

* The promotions could be for a sale.
* For a launch.
* For a fun event.
* For a customer appreciation party.
* Or just to get some free publicity.
* As a co-operative promotion with other like-minded businesses
* As a seminar or workshop
* As a theme party you throw for all the photos and videos you
could use

Or any one of a hundred different reasons to get your customers
and prospects interacting with you.

Wacky Marketing from the field

Bald head night: anyone who has their head shaved gets in for
free.

Mustache Appreciation Night: Fresno Grizzlies fans were
encouraged to grow mustaches. They also were incented to
encourage their friends to contribute $ to a worthy cause as part
of the promotion.  Contests were also held for “best in show,”
“best Tom Selleck look-alike,” and most pathetic attempt at a
mustache.  Great times – and great results.

Second Chance Night: Probation officers got in for free.  As well
as anyone who  brought in a traffic ticket and promised to never
do it again also got in for free.

Kevin Federline Night: The first 3,000 fans got free temporary
K-Fed tattoos. They also got to watch videos of K-Feds rise
through the ranks, and a dance contest between the dance troop to
which Kevin Federline once belonged and the Grizzlies’
mascot.

The Hagerstown (Maryland) Suns had a McDreamy Day: Everyone was
encouraged to dress the medical part… and to know their medical
lingo to win prizes.

Or what about Anger management night – held by the Augusta
(Georgia) Green Jackets.  One of their rival teams manager had a
meltdown… so let’s turn it into a promotion! They offered the
first 250 fans free stress  balls and DVDs of the movie Anger
Management.

[Look at all the new movies out and coming out on dvd – is there
any way you can tie a promotion into the theme of the movie? The
newest as of this week: 50/50, Money Ball, Abduction, Dolphin
Tale, Lion King 3D, Courageous, Drive, Limelight, The Debt, to
name just a few]

How can you go wrong with a Britney Spears promo?  She certainly
gives us all lots of great opportunity to make fun of her antics.
The Newark (New Jersey) Bears held a Britney Spears Baby Safety
Night. Anyone who dressed as a baby, brought a baby toy, or
brought an actual baby got in for free. Everybody else that
attended received a brochure about baby safety.

[NOTE: before you get uptight about how “hokey” or
“unprofessional” these events sound… remember how many
TICKETS they sold.  Thousands and thousands of tickets sold
per event.

They didn’t worry about the “hokeyness” of the event… they
cared about the newsworthy parts of the promotion only. News
and buzz gets people talking about buying… these events did
everything you and I should be aiming for!]

The San Antonio Missions held a Used Car Night and gave away a
dozen luxury used automobiles randomly.

Or how about the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays and their College
Course Giveaway Night?  Each fan received a free three-credit
course of their choice at nearby Kellogg Community College.

The Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team is a master
at using wacky promotions to get people in the seats.  Some of
their events: a Run, Forrest, Run 5-K Race; My Hot Dog Is Green
Night and Salute to the G-string Night in which select fans will
receive a G-string.

Get this… they even had a Vasectomy Night where a lucky male
fan would win a vasectomy. That was canceled after management
received complaints.

Talk about getting some press!

Or this: they even staged a Nobody Night, locking out fans at the
door as the club attempted to set a minor league record for
lowest attendance at a game.

Steal of a deal. Recessionary promotion gone wild with the
Minnesota twins offering an entire season (81 games) for only
$250.  Comparable seats in New York go for $250 per seat – per
game.

Hungry fans unite! The Athletics, Orioles, Rangers, Royals,
Braves, Dodgers and Padres all have designated All-You-Can Eat
sections for fans hungry to see more than a game. Ranging from
$30 – $45 per person to eat their way through the game.

Musical fan fare.  The Pirates have offered up REO Speedwagon and
Collective Soul and the Marlins offer KC and the Sunshine
Band.   The Devil Rays have the most interesting series
featuring The Commodores, Trace Adkins, Kool And The Gang, LL
Cool J and MC Hammer. (could you not offer something like this in
any of your promotions with lesser know artists?)

Luring them in. The Twins promotion department hooked some new
fans by offering a Joe Mauer fishing lure. Only available to the
first 5,000 fans, this was a run away winner.

How about some NON sports promotions?

What about the Beer-for-Bags event, which the company promoted
that they would accept beer for merchandise. They grew their
sales by 20% using this promotion (including all the free
publicity they received as well).  The company hopes to make

“Beer For Bags” an annual event, as it is in Australia.
Gonigam’s World Furniture Mall near Chicago offered customers up
to $10,000 of free furniture if the Chicago Bears shut out the
Green Bay Packers (which they did).  The company had prize
reimbursement insurance to cover their backs.  They saw huge
traffic growth to their site and an increasing amount of new
sales to people who never bought from them before.

Long John Silver’s offered to give customers free “Giant Shrimp”
if NASA found conclusive evidence of an ocean on Mars.

This is a great list you could use anytime you need a promotion.

The key is to MAKE IT FIT.

I realize 99% of those who read this blog are NOT in the sports
marketing business. But… so what?  Why can’t you put some time
and effort into this list and find some ways to use these ideas?

Keep your eyes on the local news, industry news, Hollywood
movies, strange trends, technology trends, and pretty well
anything you see on the covers of the magazines like Star,
National Enquirer, The Globe, etc (those are the ones the
majority of the population reads… and you should be finding a
way to tie into them!)

All it takes is some effort – and the results could be
exceptional.

You won’t know until you try… right?

Fantastic beasts and where to find (and profit from) them

I actually wrote this 4 years ago, and the movie JUST came out.

What a fantastic title that is.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, is a little known book by
JK Rowling.

Get it…

…or at least take the lessons I learned to heart and use them
in your business.

This is not the actual mainstream book series like Harry Potter.

This is a niche book for true fans and devoted followers.

From the back:

Not only is a great bit of teaser copy to the magical world that
lays inside these pages, it leaves a harder close than normal
books would – I SURE don’t want to get attacked by a Maticore, I
don’t know about you!

So what does this have to do with you and your marketing?

First, you need to realize that your greatest fans and customers
LOVE new products that help them understand and use more
effectively your other products.

JK Rowling has one of the best imaginations in the world, and
her ability to put that into a form millions could read is
amazing.

But she gets marketing.

She KNOWS that there is a segment of her customer base that
would love to know more about the creatures in the books and
movies that don’t even really exist (well, they do in the mind
anyhow).

88 pages of descriptions of monsters and beasts that she
created.

What they eat.
What they look like.
What to be careful of.

Did I say brilliant?

Think about your client base and the questions they have about
your products and services?

Anything keep on coming up in the questions you get?

Why don’t you create videos, books or articles that address the
questions and give them a chance to get involved.

Or create new products that help deepen the use of the existing
products they own.

If you have a client base, there are other things you should be
offering to them.

Period.

But its up to you to figure out what they want ad how they want
it delivered.

The second BIG lesson here is something I have been hinting at A
LOT lately!

Sub-niches.

A real GOLDEN opportunity for you in this present economy is to
find very specific groups of people within your client base that
have common characteristics.

Maybe a percentage of them skydive.

Or read Harry Potter books.

Or own cats.

…You can target JUST THOSE people in your marketing.

It makes your marketing much easier to do.

And even MORE easier for your ideal clients to notice.

It’s like the “Pet Lovers Realtor” I have spoken about.

She gets it.

She markets in kids magazines (parents with young kids are
highly likely to also have a pet).

She markets in pet magazines and newsletters on a local scale.

She markets in some of the usual places… but in a city of
5,000 realtors… she is the ONLY one calling herself the Pet
Lovers Realtor and using a picture of her and her dog.

So, so much easier to stand out in all the clutter when you are
calling out to a VERY specific type of person.

Do you see that?

I hope so – this is a monster opportunity to improve the results
of your marketing with just a few minor tweaks in your
approach.

Galbraith’s simple advice to consistent results in marketing and life

John Kenneth Galbraith is one of the great economists of all time.

He spent more than 50 years as a professor at Harvard University.

He wrote 48 books.

He wrote over 1000 essays and reports and research for journals, and he was an absolute superstar.

One day late in his life, a journalist interviewed him about writing.

He said, “What did you learn from your career in writing?”

He said, “I learned something very interesting, that the quality of the writing I do on the days I don’t feel like it is just as good as the quality of writing I do on the days I do feel like it.”

So take this lesson from a real writer.

Just because you don’t feel like it doesn’t mean you’re not going to do it well.

What do you need to do that you don’t feel like doing?

With lots of business owners, getting that next promotion done and out the door is something they procrastinate on.

It takes work.

It takes some thought and creativity.

And you have to actually write your promotion and hit send.

But, the payoff can be fabulous.

Ask ANYONE that does a lot of marketing and they’d agree with Galbraith.

I was reading a fantastic article about a young guy who went to prison for a couple years, and came out a better person, and a far wiser entrepreneur.

In his 2 years incarcerated, he read 197 books – and WROTE 2!

THAT is focus.

And the lessons he learned there apply as much to any of us in business as they did to his reinvention after prison.

Some of the lessons he learned, and my take on how it applies to you and I in our story telling or marketing:

Self Awareness.

This one is a hard one for most of us to admit. We want to change the world, but struggle to change ourselves FIRST. You have to own up to your limitations and distractions. As I write this, 2016 is rapidly coming to a close. Some of us reached some significant goals and milestones, others are no better off than they were a year ago. Those that DID GROW and profit, figured out what they were strong at, and weak at. If the weaknesses were critical to their momentum – they found ways to fix them! For example, if you know you get too distraction with Flakebook or surfing, STOP IT. Use the timer method mentioned above and this problem can near-disappear. Take inventory on who you are right now – and what you need/want to change in the coming months. Then do it.

Self image.

If you’re a hermit and an introvert like me, this can be a challenge. But, there are simple things you CAN do to get out of your zone and build that self-confidence. You WILL act just like the person you aspire to be – as long as you see YOURSELF as that person. BE that person. Know how they talk, walk, do deals, and sell.

Positive self talk or affirmations.

You’ve heard me mention before that my mentor was Ted Nicholas. He got me started in this business, and gave me an edge. He is also a MASTER at self-affirmations. Every morning, you need to model a guy like him (who’s sold over $7 billion in products and services) – and get in front of the mirror and say your positive affirmations. “I AM a master story teller” “I am a monster implementer” “I am a master at sales” “I AM in the shape I want to be – feeling health, and strong”.Whatever your affirmation – start repeating it. The average mind has 60,000 thoughts a day! If you are thinking negative all the time, it’s no WONDER you can’t break out of your funk. Start replacing the negatives (when you catch them – wipe them out – even see yourself washing them down in the air).

Nothing to lose.

Go at 2016/17 like you have nothing to lose. Balls to the wall – head down – massive implementation! Scared of running that personal story to your list? Do it! What’s the worst that can happen? A complaint – maybe some unsubscribes? Think there is a lot worse things to worry about than that. I realize it’s easier to be safe and sound, never pushing the envelope too far. But it’s sooooo much more fun and rewarding to say I DID IT! And it worked! Trust me – when I get into the ring to fight a guy 50 pounds heavier than me and 25 years younger – there’s lots of reasons to be fearful. But the worst that could happen is I get hurt – while the best that can happen is I win, and show some cocky young punk up!

Get comfortable being uncomfortable!

Much like #4, this is a way of thinking, and a way of life. You have a brand new year ahead of you. New habits to create. New adventures to experience. As of now, our world is in turmoil in so many ways, yet most people don’t lay down and just accept what it is – we go about our days and aim for the best. You need to set aside ALL fears, and make a point to done ONE THING A DAY that makes you uncomfortable!

Distraction free.

It’s so easy to get distracted when you are working online. Facebook. Twitter. Instagram. News channels, etc. None of those, as a distraction, make you money though. Use the 45 day plan above to get FOCUSED. Use the timer. Set multiple blocks of 33 minutes every day. 6 x 33 minute blocks of time is only 3 hours of your day – but distraction free 3 hours is far better than a disjointed 8 or 10 hour day!

Visualization.

Getting focused on the task at hand is very important – but so is your ability to SEE what you want to happen. Your ability to mentally walk through the motions you need to take is critical to smoothing out the bumps and seeing it into reality!

Be relentless in your mental massages.

You need to train your brain. This newsletter is one way to think about story telling and success. There’s a slew of books out there that you should be reading. Speed reading is a relatively easy skill to learn, and reading a book need not take you 2 weeks, when you can speed read it in a day or two! Book off your time (with a timer, if needed) for reading and writing.

Focus on the solutions, not the problems.

The media loves to throw problems and drama at you. You don’t need it. Move on, shut off the negative nellies in the media, and focus in on your end goal or solution. Research found that most people achieve solution focused thoughts, on average, 40% of the time. But, when you focus relentlessly on solutions over problems, 100% of your effort goes into it and negative thoughts disappear.

Overcome your personal and professional obstacles.

We all have them. Sometimes its a personal problem, a family issue, or some form of blockage holding you back. Other times its something in the work space causing you issues or stress. Focus in on your driving force, your WHY if you want to look at it that way. Maybe its your kids. Maybe its retirement. Maybe its financial freedom. You must have something that pushes you forward day in and day out – so make sure that one thing is in your daily review.
