Are you an information hoarder?

The first step is admitting it….

…my name is Troy White and I AM an information hoarder.

Love my books and binders and course material.

Boxes of swipe material (successful advertisements, sales letters and promotions)

Far too much of it.

But parting with it is extremely painful.

I might re-read that or need that someday….. soon.

Which happens.

But the more I hoard, the tougher it becomes to go back to that book I wanted to read again.

Does it sound like you?

Do what I do then.

I keep an area where my best, most cherished books are (looking up right now I see some classic copywriting books, psycho-cybernetics, full and not-cracked-open yet notebooks, and an ancient set of yellow pages (must throw that out right now…done).

Those are my most precious ones that I would never part with.

The others I would still protect as if a child, but many of them I am less passionate about.

Rejoice if you are a reader and information hoarder though!

As long as you are reading what you are hoarding.

I make it a point to review at least a few of my favourites a year… one of my personal ways to lock in the best of the best information I find.

You should too.

Some of my favourites that I love to review year after year:

* Robert Collier Letter book (you ad geeks out there know why)
* Advertising Secrets of the Written Word
* Magic Words
* Psycho-cybernetics
* No BS Wealth Attraction (and No BS Time Management)

…and then we could get to my hoarding of audio mp3s of courses I love. Those are alternated on my iPhone for when I am out walking the dog every day.

I do hope you love learning.

…and I do hope you re-listen/re-read your favourites…there is a real joy that comes with finding something new in something you have been through 6 times before.

Back to cleaning, purging, and getting majorly distracted in the process.

Troy

4 bitchy birds

The other day I was walking from my office to my house and heard a huge commotion going on next to me. I looked over and there were 4 little chickadees in an all-out brawl.

They were chirping and a chapping.

They were flapping their wings and pecking at each other.

From what I could tell it was all 4 of them battling each other.

They were completely oblivious that I was right next to them watching this whole brouhaha unfold. They went at it for a couple minutes, every once in a while one would try and fly up and away – one of the other grumps would chase them up in the air – scrap with them mid-air, then end up back in the bush they started in.

It was fascinating to me.

All said and done they either came to an agreement or called the scrap a draw. They ended it and each went their own way.

Mother nature provides us all ample gifts to admire and be grateful for. Sometimes we stop, pay attention, and learn from her offerings. Other times we walk on right past it without even a clue that something just unfolded before our eyes.

This bird brawl may not mean much on the surface, but I saw it, I watched with intent acuity, and noted the lesson I took away from it.

In my case, it was a dispute I was going through and I saw something happen there that showed me the lesson I needed to learn.

If you were watching it with me, your lesson may have been different.

Most would miss it altogether though…sadly.

Pay attention out there – the greatest business lessons come from the least likely of places.

Mine was in a group of 4 bithcy birds – where will yours be?

How to Get Away with Murder (Free Web Workshop)

The accused sat terrified in the prisoner’s box awaiting the magistrate’s verdict…

“Guilty as charged! Sentenced to hang by the neck until dead!”

The condemned was the town cobbler, who days earlier in a fit of blind rage had brutally bludgeoned one of his customers to death.

Normally a hanging was cause for celebration…

…But there was no cheering from the townspeople today.

One townsman, in fact, mustered some courage and stood up to address the court.

“If Your Honor pleases, you have sentenced to death the town cobbler!

“He’s the only one we’ve got. If you hang him, who will mend our shoes?”

Presently, the whole room came alive with chants for the cobbler’s release.

After restoring order in the court, the magistrate thought for a while, nodded in agreement, and overturned his own verdict.

“What you say is true”, he said.

“Since we have only one cobbler it would be a great wrong against the people to let him die. As there are two haberdashers in the town, let one of them be hanged instead!”

For entrepreneurs, the lesson is clear.

If you can position your business as desirably unique and indispensable to your clients, you can mess up a lot and still make out like a bandit.

And if you fail to create this all-
important perception, you’re going to
get killed.

That’s why I’m hosting a free training webinar later this week with Daniel Levis, creator of “Effortless Influence — How to Master the Art of The Sales Story”.

Daniel will be presenting a brand new module that teaches you how to use origin stories and killer case studies to separate your business from the competition — then eliminate them as an option.

Seating is limited. Register Now.

See you there!

PS: I just returned from speaking at Darren Week’s Superconference in Edmonton.

Hundreds of passionate entrepreneurs there, soaking up every drop of information the speakers delivered.

2 of the Dragons Den Speakers were there as well (for those in the US, Dragons Den is the same as The Shark Tank).

Robert Herjavek and Arlene Dickinson both gave fantastic talks on their business success stories.

What stuck out to me was that both of them mentioned the incredible power that entrepreneurs have in their own personal story…

…yet rarely do they see the story being used in the pitches or in the marketing.

(btw – Robert is an EXCEPTIONAL story teller!)

The Dragons see hundreds of entrepreneurs pitch their products and services every year.

Few of the entrepreneurs use their story as their asset.

The Dragons see the story as one of the greatest assets available.

Which is exactly why I have put such an emphasis on the use of stories over the past few years…why I teach people how to use stories…and why I want you to listen in as Daniel shares his best strategies for creating YOUR signature story.

Don’t miss the call! http://www.daniellevis.com/EI_white

Craziness and marketing

Here’s to the crazy ones…

…the misfits
…the rebels
…the trouble makers
…the round pegs in the square holes
…the ones with no respect for the status quo

While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see them as geniuses.

What a GREAT commercial Apple has here (and a real shame it was never used)

Watch this and see how many of your entrepreneurial friends fit the craziness description spoken about here…

Speaking of Crazy People… this reminds me – I have a post I wrote some time ago about the movie
Crazy People.

Have you seen the movie?

Anyone and everyone in small business should!

Not only is it a FUNNY movie… it gives some killer examples and concepts behind “truth in advertising”.

Check out some of the ads that Dudley Moore “wrote” in this spot from the movie…

Granted, the examples given in this post by Dudley Moore are a bit on the edge for some… but boy would they GRAB attention these days.

Absolutely love this movie and recommend you track it down.

Crazy People Rock! Both the movie and in real life.

To the wild and wacky world of success.

The real reason that Apple is taking over the world

We all lost a great visionary and leader yesterday, Mr Steve Jobs. He lost his battle with Cancer, but he has won the minds, the devotion, and the wallets of millions of people around the world.

I too recently converted my main system to an iMac, after being a devoted and hardcore iPhone, iPad, and iPod user.

I get it.

I have used their personal One-to-One service… it ROCKS.

I have called their support line… never seen or experienced anything as proficient and friendly as that.

I am a fan.

And I love watching all the non-fans bashing Apple every chance they get.

Jealousy shines through.

Apple is on a roll and there is no chance I see of it slowing down.

Even this week’s iPhone announcement.

EVERYONE thought an iPhone 5 was coming… me too.

So everyone cried the blues when it was JUST a 4S out.

Why?

So what?

Its faster…better graphics…better camera…beter o/s…better speech recognition…and Siri.

My iPhone 3G has had a smashed screen since the summer, and I will be buying my new phone on Friday.

It is a great phone… who cares if the actual case isn’t different – that’s what the iPhone 5 was all about…right?

There are so many lesson in watching Apple grow and market themselves. Many of the Apple Success Secrets, I posted in this article.

But here are some other thoughts I posted on my examiner.com blog…

Not only do they have some of the slickest products in the marketplace today, Apple has by far the best customer care.

Take the new iPhone 4S, or the iPad 2, or the wonderfully elegant and powerful iMac 27″ system. Each and every one of them is well-designed, beautifully manufactured, with a solid and robust system for installing and upgrading apps.

Have a problem with one or more of them? Visit your local Apple store and get an immediate appointment with one of their technicians or one-to-one trainers. It is seamless and they know what they are doing…problems solved in no time.

If you are stuck at home or at the office…pick up the phone and call Apple Care. Within 5-10 minutes you are not only looked after, you have your answer, you have a friendly person to talk to, and they have updated their files so you never again have to explain who you are or what your history is with Apple.

Last, they are a MASTER at launching (and not telling in advance) new products. They have built such a devoted client base that grows by the minute, and eagerly awaits the next opportunity to pull out that credit card and charge up another $500 or $1,000.

Look at the latest iPhone 5 launch. Even up until the minute they announced the new product, no one really had a clue what they were launching. Apple woulddn’t tell… maybe some false rumours spread around to stir up the pot a bit…. but no real hard data showing exactly what was about to be released. Apple fans were foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the newest and greatest launch… and they weren’t disappointed.

Dare I say, unless the big computer companies of the world get it together, Apple will soon be converting ever one of them over to their world. Unless HP gets its act together and brings out something new and innovative. Unless Microsoft starts making their operating system easier to use, upgrade, and keep secure. Unless RIM pulls one out of the hat and delivers a wickedly innovative new Blackberry. Unless someone, anyone, steps up and shows that they are just as innovative as Apple is being…

…Apple will rule the computer world and the pc/android crowd will be crying in their parent’s basement.

Someone, anyone, please give Apple a run for their money here and show some form of initiative and creativity!

If you don’t…you will disappear.
